About this position:
This lead worker position has the responsibility to assign work in consultation and with the direction of the field supervisor, and coordinate and review the work of other employees at the experienced and lower levels in the classification series. Coordinate the work of professional staff by making and reviewing work assignments, establishing priorities, coordinating activities, conducting quality control review, and resolving complex related work problems.  Provide program-related training and outreach to division staff, industry, and other partners.  Perform full range of professional level duties relative to the division's nursery program.

This position is required to follow established standard operating procedures and meet quality, quantity and timeliness standards for assigned work..

Required Education and Experience

Education

Possession of a bachelor's degree in agronomy, animal science, animal nutrition, biology, botany, crop and soil science, entomology, horticulture, forestry, plant biology, plant pathology, plant science, or plant physiology, or a related field.

Experience

Three years of professional experience in enforcing and/or complying with the laws and regulations pertaining to pesticide use, insects, pests, and plant diseases in agricultural commodities and horticultural stock equivalent to a Plant Industry Field Scientist, including one year equivalent to a Plant Industry Field Scientist P11.

Leave Time

Full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation days per year. Employees also receive 13 sick days per year and 8 hours of leave to participate in certain school functions or community activities. Employees may also qualify for up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave for certain family or medical situations.

Holidays

State employees receive 13 scheduled holidays each year, including New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day, just to name a few. State employees also receive Election Day off every other year.

Paid Parental Leave

Provides eligible individuals up to 12 weeks of paid leave immediately following birth or adoption of a child.

Deferred Compensation

Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from their paychecks.

Retirement

Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match up to 3%. The Office of Retirement Services administers two different retirement plans for State of Michigan employees: Defined Benefit (DB) and Defined Contribution (DC). New hires can also receive up to a 2% employer match into a Personal Healthcare Fund and a lump-sum credit to a tax-deferred account if eligible.
